why do i need rear wheel nuts on my bike i have been told you do not need them?

this is a serious question i would like the answer from someone in the trade as my wheel came out and i came of as the nut were loose they say the wheel would not come out, i was out of the saddle putting pressure on the pedal, hope you can help
