Why do Mormons say that a prophet and apostle of Jesus Christ is wrong?

Bruce R. McKonkie, chosen of Jesus Christ to be an apostle, said in his acclaimed book Mormon Doctrine that black skin is a curse upon people who were less valiant to God in the pre-existence. Why would the LDS church disobey the word of God's apostle and omit from the book these teachings?
