It seems most of them haven't heard that Joseph Smith fancies himself the second coming, that dark skin is a curse from god, that god lives on the planet Kolob etc.? (I am not making this up, search for "god kolob")

Why do mormons seem to know so little about their religion?

As a former mormon, I can assure you that most members know practically *nothing* about their own religion -- especially its history. They are actively discouraged from reading anything other than what official church publications feed them. I had no clue about most of the nonsense that's involved until first I went through the temple (you've got to be kidding me!), and second I left the church.
What a pantload.

Peace.

If most of them really knew their religion, they would run away from it as fast as they could. That is why they are not taught it until they become elders.

I belonged to the Mormon church for eight years and in all that time had not been told about the "magic underwear". Apparently it's only for certain members who have been married in the Temple. They kept a lot of stuff secret. Just like with Scientology. If they tell you about the levels of heaven and the fact that you can become a god of your own little world, you might actually get a clue that is just a pile of rubbish.
