Why do conductors of major symphony orchestras have 'rehearsal conductors' ? That is, I have noticed that noted conductors do not regularly rehearse with their ensemble, but let someone else do the rehearsing. Then the regular conductor steps up to the podium on performance night, and at the end takes all the bows. Why ?
