Why do people copy/follow trends rather than be orginal and create their own?

Even me, if I see someone wearing something really trendy or cool I'll want to go out and get the same thing myself. I just find it sad that we are so brainwashed into fashion, style, trends, etc that we forget to be original and just follow the crowd. Even in school, if you wear fashionable clothes everyone will love you and think you're "cool" but if you dress up in no-brands people don't look twice at you. It's just so sad.
