Why do people swarm over new electronic gadgets like flies over s***?

I've noticed they only do it for gadgets like cell phones, smart phones and computers. If only they would put that much excitement over solar energy or wind energy making this world better in that sense. But no they pour all their money in stuff like the latest phone or gadget.
