Why do people try to get sunburned on vacation?

A lot of times I see people on the beach laying in the sun, and their skin just ends up being as red as a tomato. Also when I see facebook pictures of people going on vacation, I see a bunch of people who are very sunburned, not tanned, but sunburned. Why do people try to get sunburned intentionally and why does it seem like they find themselves attractive with one? First of all, sunburns can be very painful, and second they look ugly.
