reach 30 + miles? http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4252653

i need a handheld radio and saw this...is there a downside to the radio mentioned above?
uhh im not criticizing...

Simple: those radios don't get 30+ miles, and even if they do, they require a special license to use certain channels that WILL get that range.

They're good for 2 miles at most, and even that is stretching their capability. 500 yards is about as far as I've seen them work well.

People can use whatever they want. Who are you to criticize?

The handheld units have a range of 20 to 30 miles in a straight line of sight FLAT area, without tress, buildings or earth (hills, gulleys and valleys, between the two or more units that are communicating.

Cb radios on the other hand, while they have some of the same limitations, can take advantage of repeaters on hills in rural areas. And with powered antennas have a much better range than these type of handheld units. And some of these work better than others, and the sets I have used in the past normally got returned after a week or so, because of not being able to hear the weak speakers and the headphone jacks not working with a lot of different earbuds.
