Why do some Christians equate idolatry with being a fan of a celebrity?

I've heard some people say that idolatry doesn't necessarily have to mean worshipping an idol, that it can also relate to activities like television, sports, video games, etc. I am having a hard time comprehending this. Surely no one is praying to a TV set.
