Why do some gays and lesbian couples try to mimick a heterosexual relationship?

Why do some homosexual couples assume the roles of 'butch and bitch' or the 'lipstick lez and the butch lez'? I don't understand it. Why not just be the gender you are. Females are naturally feminine, men naturally masculine. I undertand that sometimes men are naturally more feminine in nature, or women sometimes more masculine in mentality. But why purposefully go out of your way to mimmick the opposite gender? Why do some lesbians feel the need to get short haircuts and wear crappy baggy clothes? Why do some men feel the need to dress like women? Why not just be homosexual but embrace the gender you were born as?
Tazu: I'm going to go out on a limb here, and talk about fashion sense. The real ticker?? I'm straight. Uh oh..look out. See, the thing is..that certain clothing and hairstyles were designed specifically for certain headshapes, and codytypes. Ie; men's haircuts= looks better and NATURAL on men girls haircute = girls.. Sure there are some styles that are fashionably androgynous. And some people can pull it off. But hey..if you happen to be a girl and like having a frat boy hair cut...and you like it. fine. just know it looks ...awkward. b/c it is going against what that style is really meant for. that is all. not trying to be a hater.
Lisa: About as clear as mud to me. Haha thank you for trying to explain it to me politely though.
Edit: I do not think that gender crossing dressers are going to "harm" me. I don't have a phobia about it. If I saw a gay girl with a buzzcut and a harley shirt I'm not going to run home screaming or anything. Nor am I saying people "can't" dress a certain way. I am just wondering why people go to extremes in the cross-gendering way they dress.
