I've met some people who say that making fun of yourself is not funny. Why?
My dad always tried to teach me that being laughed at was a bad thing, but I never got it. My adult philosophy has become: "If you are laughing at yourself, everyone is laughing WITH you."
While emotional damage may be a consideration in his philosophy, my first thought is that he was simply parroting the parenting style he was raised with. "They're laughing at you." was a common phrase among parents until roughly the early 1980s when the "I'm your friend" style of parenting became popular.
