Why do stores display and sell holiday items much earlier than they used to?

Get this! When I was in the gift store at Cracker Barrel a few days ago, they have Thanksgiving and even Christmas items for sale. A company I work for is even selling some New Years stuff already! Several decades ago, stores didn't carry holiday stuff 2-3 months early; they waited until about a month before the hioliday. Seeing Christmas stuff being sold 3 months early seems ridiculous to me! Why are stores and other businesses selling and displaying Christmas and other holiday merchandise much earlier now than they did a few decades ago?
