probably worn out brake pads. when your pads are wearing out, there is a metal backing and when that contacts the metal rotor, it makes a squeeling noise. if you let this continue, it can damage your rotors.

...to a stop? I have an '06 Jetta and the brakes make a very embarrasing and loud noise usually when the car is cold and often when just coming up on a slow stop, ie stop sign. It's not a grinding sound. Dealer says this noise happens because car has ceramic brakes and they need to warm up and nothing can be done to get rid of noise. Ceramic brakes are on lots of cars these days so why don't I hear this noise on other cars?? Is there anything that can be done to stop this loud and embarrasing noise?

Sounds like the dealer is jerking you around. If you are still under warranty, I would speak to someone higher in the chain of command and demand it gets fixed for no charge. I have been doing brakes for over 30 years and I have never heard of ceramic brakes needing to warm up, that is absurd.

How many miles are on the car? Most brake shoes have feelers that tell you when your they are coming to the end of their lives by making a similar sound when you stop.

its metal on metal so get the pads and rotors replaced. and maybe the calipers to if the cylenders dont move

the brakes need either cleaning or replacement. if the problem is new, wait a few days and see if it goes away (did you drive through big pudles, etc?)

If the pads are low, there are metal squealers that will rub the rotor.

If they're not, the pads were installed wrong and whoever did the last brake job needs to re-do it.

Ceramic pads won't squeal excessively, unless you have high performance, autocross/track style pads. Which you do not

if the pads are good and not rubbing the wear indicators and that`s why they squeal they design them that way.but if they are good you can purchase a product at the parts store that is applyed to the back of the pads to stop the vibration and squeal.
