Do the females have some sort of advantageover the males (speed, perhaps)? Or is it just a societal type thing that evolved to be that way?

Any scientific theories or reasons for this?
Of course they hunt to feed their cubs...but they hunt for the entire pride (their group), including the males. It's not like squirrels, where the male humps the female, then runs off living his own life while the female sticks it out as a single parent and sole provider. They live as a family, with the female as the breadwinner, and I'm just curious if there's a reason for it.
