Why do torrents go so slow at first, then pick up tremendous speed?

It seems like whenever I download something with bittorrent, it goes extremely slow for the first half hour or so, and says it will take 50 million ice ages to complete...then about an hour later it accelerates rapidly. Is there any way to make it accelerate rapidly right away?
 
takes some times for some connections from other computers to begin
 
When you start downloading your computer is connecting to the Seeder... after some time it gets the connection and its fully connected to all of the seeder therefore it picks up speed. I think there might be a way to make it go faster. I think its something to do with your Torrent downloading sodtware port setting....
