back when he ufc started out it wanted something to be like its catch phrase. like lets say the goldena arches for mcdonalds and so on. anyway the ufc chose to make the its ring in a shape as an octagon so it could always been remembered and its worked. . i read in a magazine, that martial arts had always been on a white man. or a ring. now when u think mma u think octagon. though this is good for the ufc, not all mma competitions use this. dana white said now the octagon is notorious for its marketing . like on ppv nights, the ultimate fighter, and commercials they wanted the octagon to be a center of attention like wow, look at it. and i think its worked. the octagon has now transformed mma fighting .

Why do the fighters fight inside of an octagon? I understand that it's in a cage where they can't get marked out or step outside of the ring. But why is it imperative that it has eight sides? Why don't they just make it a regular square like they do in a boxing or wrestling match? I'm curious to know what the significance is of the octagon. If anyone can give me a brief history about the octagon, I would greatly appreciate it.

If they fought in a circle, they would get confused if someone told them to piss in a corner

Because the Octagon is symbolic of the organization. The UFC chose a shape- the Octagon, and now, when we think of MMA, we think of the Octagon. It was clearly effective.

The octagon has stuck since the sports birth. The original owners of the UFC tried to think of alot of ways to make the "ring" more dramatic, they even talked about having a moat with alligators in it. The octagon was settled on to completely seperate the UFC from any other combat sport at the time, it worked and it stuck.
