Why do we argue a lot?

I have been talking to this guy for about 3 months. We attend the same college, but I was home for the summer so I have not seen him since May. He is not very open about things, I think because he has emotional baggage. We argue a lot. If I say something he does not like, he says nasty words to me instead of communicating like an adult. I told him I was tired of him being disrespectful and lets distance ourselves for a while. I get along with mostly everybody, I am quiet. I don't understand why me and him can't get along...it is so weird. I do like him and he told me he does like me, but I don't understand why we argue so much. Is there anyway to resolve this? Or should we just continue not to talk?
