I am learning taekwondo and they get us to practice yelling. Why do you need to shout in martial arts?

The moment you are getting hurt. Don't worry when you'll be kicked you'll scream automatically.
BTW Teakwondo is a joke. MMA or Vale Tudo or Kickboxing is the way to go.

Its not a scream or yell. If your doing or hearing either its wronge

Its called a kiai. You tighing up your hara pushing the air out of you lungs.
The sound in not comming from your throat but your diapham

Haha. The reasons vary. Some do it because they feel it motivates the student. Some feel that it regulates the breathing. I don't do it. Granted I do Chinese martial arts, wushu. But still, some student still do the scream or the "Kia" as they refer to it. The real answer behind the kia may lie behind the Korean history of the martial art.

That not in all MAs but exhaling when u strikes or kicks give it more power.

Yep. the reason differs. Some do it, because it sounds cool :D But maybe the main reason is that by releasing the air stored in your lungs while kicking or punching actually makes the attack stronger and faster. Give it a try ;) I've trained taekwondo as well and I know a couple of things ;)

Why do you need to scream when you're getting attacked? I don't know. Maybe because it attracts attention and signifgantly improves your chances if LIVING. It also tightens up your muscles and prevents injury, yuddie yuddie yuddie. But I like that survival one.
