Why does Ares always say connecting but never connects?

I downloaded it from the Ares site and everytime I open it it never connects; obviously my connection is good because I'm online. So what the heck is going on?

The connection could be getting interrupted from a firewall. Check the settings in your security software to be sure they are correct.

Otherwise you system could be infected, which would cause the app to appear not connected when in fact it is.
