I've had my 1988 toyota camry automatic for a while and it has always had a pretty rough idle, when i got it i worked on it a bit and got it to stay at a pretty normal level although it was still on the rough side, but i've noticed recently that the idle has slowly gotten rougher. When I stop at a red light I usually have to put the car into neutral to stop the shaking. I was wondering what could be causing it to idle so roughly and what I could check without clearing out my wallet. More info on the car: The A/C belt is ready to snap so I never use the ac, the accelerator sticks so I have to press on it hard before I start the car and then it's fine when I drive it. The car has slowly been getting better mileage, it started with getting 22 mpg and now is right about 25-26mpg

It sounds to me like you have a Idle air control motor that needs to be replaced or you could have a vacuum leak. If you are getting better fuel economy but the engine is still idling rough than the engine may be running lean which is a bad condition it could mess up the engine if if is running lean. Its something that a mechanic has to look at. They need to hook a scanner up to the cars Computer to get it checked for trouble codes. Also you need to specify which engine you have to four cylinder or the V6. the 4 cylinder will have a rough idle when the A/C is on or when one of the belts is going bad. I had a 91 Camry DX the same body style as yours.
