Why does my black bear hamster keep trying to escape?

I just got a black bear hamster and he climbs the water bottle and tries to escape. I play with him and hold him and let him run in a ball, but he every time i put him back he tries to chew through the cage. Is this normal? I don't have a wheel for him. should I get one? what should I do?

It might be the missing wheel, but its a possibility he might not like captivity
