Why does my cat do this?

I'm really freaking out. It's about 12:30 am and my cat keeps going behind my blinds and staring out my window. Then he runs out into the dark living room and back to my window. He does this several times. And it's not the first time he's done it. I looked out the window and there is nothing there. I thought maybe he saw a coyote or dog but there's nothing. What is he doing??

Potentially, I'd wager that your cat's accelerated sense of smell is picking up the scent of an unfamiliar animal roaming the neighbourhood that's eliciting an instinctual response. I wouldn't worry too much - if the cat is an indoor animal (and even if it isn't) and you're in a place that's in the vicinity of predatory creatures such as coyotes and the like, just keep it safely indoors. Chances are that it's a raccoon or a migratory bird that's not native to your region, but with our pets, we're always better safe than sorry.

All cats are fascinated by the dark, they are naturally nocturnal creatures. They have cats eyes which glow in the dark, possibly detecting something you can't see. It is quite normal.
