why does my cat prefer to sit on my lap, rather than lay?

its a bit annoying. only started doing this in the past couple weeks. i try to get him to lay down, which he does for a time, but will often resist or go back to sitting. he'll just sit there, looking around, as if my lap is just as good as any place else to just sit, but it isn't.
