why does my hard drive makes loud whining noise?

I haven't used this hard drive in a long time. I remember it working fine before (as a secondary drive). But now makes a really loud whining noise for the first minute but goes away and doesn't come back unless I restart (noise seems to happen only at the beginning of starting up). Is my hard drive about to go bad?

Yes, there could be a problem. Download HDDSCAN and see if the SMART status is ok on your hard drive. If not, your hard drive is about to break. In that case - get an external hard drive and copy all your stuff over it. Better be to make the whole drive image and then use it to restore on a new hard drive. Acronis True Image Home software would help a lot. It depends on the noise.. Unless I can hear the noise it's hard to say what exactly is going on.
