Why does my vw gearbox crunch into first gear?

I have a golf gti 16v mk3, and im having trouble with selecting first gear sometimes goes in ok but most of the times it crunches into gear. Any clues folks?????All other gears are fine???

If i need to replace gearbox oil any advice in regard to doing this would be much appreciated.

No this is from a standing start that it crunches into first. Would appreciate sensible answers thanks.

Are you moving at the time it "crunches"? i.e Are you coming to a stop in second gear, and trying to put it in first?

Cos if you are, you shouldn't be doing that, the car should come to a stop in second with clutch engaged. Wait until the car is fully stopped and engage first gear, and if you need power whilst still moving, second gear will suffice.

My missus constantly crunches in to first gear, and it p*sses me off because it's my car and my gearbox she's wrecking.
