Why does the body need 2,000 calories if required nutrients can be gained by less?

I do not understand why a person needs approximately 2,000 calories if a person can retain all that makes the body work properly in just 1,000 calories.
Example: My Complete Nutrition shake only has about 500 calories, but the nutrition facts compared to what the body needs does not lack anything. So I am curious why another approximately 1,500 calories need to be taken in.
