Why does the US media group all terrorists as Al-Qaeda?

I believe the term Al-Qaeda popped up from Osama when he alluded to the training camps of the Mujahideen (the US created and supported Islamic fighters in Afghanistan who fought off the Soviets in the 80s). Now any militant islamic extremist is referred to as Al-Qaeda, which I think is misleading because the US can then sort of prove it is at war with some huge organization that is ostensibly just pockets of US-created terrorists.

For example, two Austrian tourists were captured by "Al-Qaeda" claims the media today. The North African terrorists were obviously black, but that's all you can tell. Maybe I got it all wrong or I'm missing something, but what do you think is the deal with calling them all terrorists Al-Qaeda? From inference, Al-Qaeda means islamic extremists who use terror because they believe America and other Western countries are responsible for their grievances, which are that muslims are being killed, their lands taken, and their religion denigrated.
