Why doesn't a ripped DVD save on a hard drive?

My brother's been trying to rip some dvd's he's recorded onto a external hard drive so he can just take the hard drive with him over seas rather than all his discs, but it doesn't seem to work.
We tried a dozen different programs, none of which seemed to work the way we wanted them. Finally his friend said he was doing the same thing, using DVD Shrink and had gotten his movies saved on his PC, so my brother took his laptop and external hard drive over by him and tried the same thing. It seemed to work, until he took the disc out and the videos that seemed to be saved no longer played - instead of saving videso, it had just produced a shortcut or something.

Why did the videos copy for one of them but not the other, when they used the same program, doing the same exact thing? Is it the external hard drive? Was it because one was on a laptop and the other was on a desktop computer? None of these seem like likely reasons, but I can't figure out what to tell him what's going.
