Why don't we have small Renault's or Fiats in the US?

They get much better fuel millage with their 3-cylinder 75hp diesel engines (80 mpg average). Also the VW models sold in the US get 10mpg worse then the exact same car sold in Europe, can someone explain why this is? Are the car companies keeping these cars away from us so we keep burning large amounts of fuel? I don't even see any American car companies building any good 4-cylinder cars this year, GOOD CARS NOT PIECES OF JUNK.
