Why, in Judaism and Islam, are pigs considered "unclean?"?

My thought is perhaps back when the laws of the religions were written, people got sick from eating poorly-prepared pork.

But I would like to know other reasons/possible reasons.

I was raised Jewish and I heard two explanations.

One explanation is that God wanted people to be vegetarians. At first he told Adam and Eve to eat only plants. When that turned out not to be possible, the Mosaic Law said to eat only animals that ate plants, not carnivores. It wasn't just the pig (who is, technically, an omnivore, like us!) but all carnivorous animals were banned.

The other explanation had to do with trichinosis and other parasite problems that only carnivores have. People didn't know that if you cook the pork until all the pink is gone it's okay. They noticed that sometimes people ate pork and got sick so they said it was dirty. The same went for shellfish--if they were out of season they were poisonous, but nobody noticed that, and besides they didn't have the same months that we do, so you couldn't just eat them in a month with an 'R' in it. 8^) So they just said 'Don't eat that'.

And there's another reason. If you ask orthodox Jews today why they follow these rules they tell you that it's not because they're afraid God will be angry and punish them, it's just respect for tradition, for the old ways, and their role in the universe as Jews. I don't follow the rules myself, but I find that very respectable and commendable, to try to stay in touch with the ancient traditions of one's people.

If the so called 'Holy Books" say do not eat beef instead of pork The same reasons will be given like Allahu Akabar above for that too. For example how the bulls or buffaloes lie on their own feceas , etc. etc., how they carry pasasites, how some people died sometime back etc. etc. The Chinese have proved there is NOTHING SPECIALLY WRONG IN EATING PORK. Beef is allergic to me. Even tomatoes. Why do not the 'Holy books' say Do not eat those allergic food to those who have such problem? If beef was allergic to a "God's Messenger" then everyone who follows that religion will have to abstain eating it.

ALL THESE EXPLANATIONS ARISE FOR NOT EATING PORK ARISE FROM BLIND FAITH. Eat any meat when they are good and dont eat them when they are bad. Any animal defecate when the need arises. They can be trained like others not do so that can be done even to pigs. Go by science, not by 'logic' that is illogical at the background. .

Why do you want science too to go by the religions? It is enough to go by science; MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN GOING BY THE RELIGIOUS STATEMENT THAT ARE NOT MADE ON REASONING.
 
I doubt if it was because of disease from the animals.
It might be from disease associated with the animals though.
Especially if you consider the water requirements of hogs and the prevalence of malaria and other diseases vectored to humans via mosquito.
Mosquitoes are vectors for West Nile, Malaria, Dengue Fever, Rift Valley Fever, Yellow Fever, and Equine Encephalitis. I am sure I missed a few too.
You also have more flies attracted to hogs, again because hogs need wet wallows to keep cool in.
Flies mean cholera and diphtheria.

If that was not enough there is the problem of finding water for hogs in an arid climate. Note that the only pigs mentioned in the New Testament are the Gadarine Swine at the shore of lake Galilee.
Pigs do best in temperate forested areas with plenty of water and shade.
In a region with such limited water resources as the Roman Province of Palestine (modern Israel) the effects of water pollution from swine herding would have been a real problem too.

Then we can look at the business of trying to find pasture or of raising feed for the hogs. Most of the area only produced livestock by nomadic grazing.
It was simply too difficult to grow enough grain or other crops to feed a herd of pigs in most of the region, and pigs do not do well being herded through the desert grazing on grasses.

It makes a lot of economic and ecological sense to limit pork production by Hebrew tribes during the 5 centuries before the start of the common era.
The easiest way to do that without an outright ban is to declare pork unclean and impose diet restrictions on it.
 
Health reasons have absolutely nothing to do with why we do not eat pork. A cow or sheep that is not killed in the proper way is just as unkosher as pork, just as forbidden. It is a misconception that pork is worse than other unkosher foods, the Torah just singles it out as the pig family is the only family of animals that has a cloven hoof and does not chew the cud- thus creating confusion over whether it is unkosher. It also specifically mentions those animals which chew the cud and doe not have a cloven hoof such as the hare, horse and camel so there will be no confusion there.

We do not know exactly why- the Torah states by the laws of Kashrut "zeh CHOK"- A "chok" is a category of law for which their is no rational explanation (which puts health reasons out of contention- those are very rational and obvious!) The most accepted explanation has to do with the fact that the purpose of the Torah is to elevate us spirituality. As our physical bodies are cut off from spirituality, the Torah provides us with various means of elevating physical acts to spiritual ones. Thus we regulate our physical acts and thus move our physical bodies towards spirituality by not following our base instincts. Sex is altered through marriage, we say prayers before we go to sleep and as we wkae up- and we eat only kosher food

The pork is rich with the compounds that contains a high rate of sulfur and all affect the tissues absorption ability to the water as sponge that take the shape of vast bag and this led to the deposition of the mucous substance in sinews, ligaments, cartilages between vertebrae and to degeneration in the bones

And the tissues that contains sulfur are damaged by rotten producing a spread bad odor and caused hydrogen sulphate gas and it was noticed that the containers that contains the pork although it is perfectly closed it's odor spreads from the room after few days as a result of it's bad rotten odor and it's unsustainable odor

Contrastly, other types of meat was passed by the same experiment and it was found that the rotten of beef is more slower than the pork and this rotten odor doesn't spread from it. The pork contains a high ratio of growth hormone which has a great effect on the infection (material's ends), also it has an effect on the stomach growth (The potbelly) and increase the growth rate especially the designed for growth and cancer development

According to professor Roff studies these fatty meals that contain pork consider essential in cell's cancer turning as it contains the growth hormone and it has a great effect in rising blood cholesterol

It's amazing that pig is rich pasture for more than 450 epidemic diseases and it is playing the role of intermediary to transform 57 diseases to man, in addition to these diseases that are caused from eating pork as dyspepsia, the atherosclerosis and many others.

The pig itself is responssible alone to transform 27 epidemic diseases to human and some other animals participate it in other diseases but it stills the store and the main source of these diseases as: The liar hydrophobia, Wile disease, Japanese fever, Malta fever, Scrofula, Meningitis, krip epidemics, The pig's flu & others.
 
The popular response is definitely that pork made people sick back in the day so it was written into religious books that you shouldn't eat it.

Christopher Hitchens explained an alternate hypothesis in one of his books. He doesn't believe the "pork made people sick" idea because there were other communities that had no problems with keeping and eating pork. He said that because of the genetic similarities between people and pigs, it's likely that pork smells like human flesh when it is cooking. He also said that firefighters have a tendency to stay away from pork. I have no idea if there is any truth to it, but it's an interesting hypothesis to say the least.

To the second answer about pigs being unclean:
Hamsters sometimes eat their kiddies, too, but they're still viewed as being adorable. They also sometimes bite you, or defecate on your hand while you're holding them.
 
Pigs do not sweat like other animals, the poisons of the body are stored in the fat. They clean up garbage so are scavengers and we are not to eat scavengers because they clean up decease. Some people believe it caused arthritis, not a proven fact.

Same way with some of the seafood. Shrimp are always found clinging to dead bodies. Uhg..I like them too.
 
Most of the dietary laws involved health reasons. They were not to eat anything they found dead. They could eat food the day they cooked it ,and the next day, but not after that. Those are common sense for health purposes.

Pigs can carry parasites, but more than that, pig's anatomy is somehow genetically compatible with humans to the point that they can pass disease to humans. The recent swine flu is an example which is believed to have originated in a pig farm in Mexico.

Most all enfluenzas that have orginated in other animals, like birds, before being passed to humans were incubated in pigs. If it wasn't for pigs we would not have a lot these diseases develop in humans.
 
Pigs wallow in their own filth, and they are scavengers- they eat anything and everything. Some will even eat their own young.

Not exactly "clean" sounding, is it?
 
answer: actually hygiene doesn't explain why some animals were considered kosher and some weren't.

One theory is that pig, eels, shrimp and other creatures were considered "rich" dishes, indulgences. They were often the center of pagan feasts.

By being forbidden, Jews were kept separate from their pagan neighbors and weren't focused on themselves but on family and religion.

One certain reason - a pig cannot be killed in a kosher manner. They don't have necks, you can't cut their throats with an extremely sharp knife in one slice.

Jewish people are cool.

Islamic people can go die. They don't eat any pork because it is a religious tradition. Pigs roll in dirt= dirty. Us stuck up terrorists will not eat dirty
 
In Leviticus chapter 11 the God Yahweh is explaining and teaching Moses how to identify clean or healthy creatures humans should be eating to maintain proper health and nutrition in our bodies while we are alive on Earth and unclean or unhealthy creatures humans should not be eating for disease prevention reasons in the human body that are still unknown to our human medical scientists today. Yahweh is explaining to Moses how to identify these creatures from their external features from what Yahweh knows about how these creatures internal features work and their effect good or bad on human health if consumed as a food product. The clean or healthy animals Yahweh is referring to for humans to eat are all even toed animals that also have a four chambered stomach or what our scientists classify as ruminants, such as sheep, cattle, goats and deer just to name a few of many more. Yahweh is then telling Moses that the internal features of the pig are different by explaining to Moses that the pig does not chew its' cud or the pig has a single simple stomach and not a four chambered stomach as ruminant animals do even though the pig also has even toed hoofed feet. Yahweh is telling us that the meat of all unclean animals are just as unhealthy for humans to eat as the pig is eventhough the pig got the worst reputation out of all unclean animals. Yahweh is warning us that the meat of these animals cause unnecessary diseases to form in the human body no matter how you raise, feed or cook these animals.
