Why is british humour so dark?

I am doing a paper over possibilities of why British humour is so dark. I need something that sort of says what brought britain to this. My teacher thought that this would be a perfect topic for me because I watch a lot of British TV (which i love this topic) and it would be cool to know the origins. If you give an answer, give some sources, because i'll need those to cite. thanks! btw, no wikipedia.
