There's a flaw in n2johnson's logic. I'm sure he's not exaggerating when he says he's seen more HDs on the side of that particular road, but since it's a major route to Sturgis I bet more HDs travel that road than all the other brands put together. That's like saying Wal Mart sells crappy products because they have more returns than all the other retailers put together. Considering they sell more products that all the other retailers combined, that's what you'd expect.
If you think "everyone" is impressed with HD, then apparently you haven't been on this forum very long.
Why are people "impressed"? The reason is name recognition plain and simple. Ask people to name a bulldozer and they'll say Caterpillar. In fact, caterpillar is the generic term for a bulldozer. With old timers, all refrigerators were a "Frigidaire" and all freezers were "Deep Freezes", both names of a manufactuer. Many people call adjustable wrenches a "Cresent" wrench, another manufacture. Ask someone in New York City who has never been outside the city limits to name a tractor and they'll say John Deere, which is just one of many manufactuers. Ask a housewife which beef is best and she'll say Angus. Angus beef isn't any better than that from other breeds, it's just that the Angus Breeders Association has done a super job of selling their name to the public. HD is much like the ABA when it comes to marketing their name.
Whether good or bad, names stick with people. How many times is a lousy product called an Edsel? If you're too young to know, Edsel was a marketing failure for Ford Motor Company. Good car but there was no market for it.
