Why is Linux the operating system of choice for so many electronic gadgets?

Some people view Linux as the anti-microsoft. The popularity of Linux is because of the fact that it is open source, meaning people can view and make changes to the programming codes and make the program do what they want it to do. Also, usually you can find at least a couple of versions of Linux for no cost, versus paying a minimum of $100 for a copy of windows. I personally never liked it as it usually was a pain to get it to do what I needed it to do and when I finished that Linux class, I was really hoping I would never have to see that operating system again.
