My car gauge shows it is overheating sporadically. Like coming out of a parking garage, or in stop and go traffic. It doesn't seem to actually be overheating though. It will flash "overheating" for about 30 seconds to a minute, then go back to normal. Plus my heater doesn't work very well, I'm wondering if the two are related....Thanks in advance.

Your heater core is fed from a coolant bypass that does just that. It bypasses the thermostat. Most likely you have something failing such as the water pump, or a clogged radiator. The car will start to overheat when at idle due to low coolant flow. When you start driving not only are you turning the pump faster and flowing an acceptable amount of coolant but you are pushing more air through the radiator. You need to verify that the high speed fan is coming on when the car starts to get hot. You should be able to hear it turn on from the front of the vehicle.

Get this taken care of before doing much more driving! Overheating will blow head gaskets and destroy engines! It's far cheaper to repair this now.

Cheers

Check the coolant level in the radiator- low coolant will cause both symptoms.
