why is my cat so needy all of a sudden?

I have a seven yrs old maine coon and he is driving me crazy!!! I sleep with my door closed and that has never been a problem but in the last few weeks..he's scratching, meowing that low long meow, and he's bumping up against my door. I can't sleep! I open my door and he's all over the place. I give him alot of attention during the day(definitely spoiled) so I know he's not lonely. I just don't know why he's being so clingy and I don't know what to do about it. ......and I know I could just leave my door open and all that, but I absolutely hate the sound of any animal cleaning themselves..kinda OCD. So that's not an option. Any help with this would be great : )

I had a female cat that was like this - independent one day and wouldn't leave my side the next.

The only thing I came up with was...is he neutered? Some of that sounds like a non-neutered behavior.

Otherwise, no idea! I leave my doors open for them, but I understand it's not for everyone.
 
I have a 7 year old Maine coon that is doing exactly the same at the moment. I usually don't see much of him as he sleeps with my daughter, but this last week has been incredible. Everywhere I turn, he's there. He comes on the sofa and sits as close as he can to me, he meows constantly... I was worried he was sick, but he appears healthy, eating, drinking, doing his bathroom duties, no other weird behaviour.
I wonder if it's a 7 year itch of some kind?
 
all cats, male or female are like women. sometimes you just gotta smack them a bit, wake 'em up.
