Why is my internet so slow when downloading torrents?

I have Comcast and my cable runs to fiber optics just down the street. On speakeasy speed test my download speed is 27k kb and upload is 3k kb. On speedtest.net my download is 31.19mb and 4.02mb upload. I'm using a Linksys wrt54gs router and a rca dcm315r modem. Win XP. 40 processes running. 588 PF usage with itunes and winamp open (11000 songs in each library) and bitlord. When I am downloading with bitlord my internet is verrryy slow.. internet explorer will often crash or take forever to open a new tab. it doesn't matter if the download speed is 100 kbps or 1500 kbps. what would cause my internet to be so slow and make internet explorer crash?
my processor is an amd 4600+ dual core 2.4ghz and i have 2gb of ram (1024x2) pc6400 800 mhz 128bit
i am not worried about the download speed of the torrents. and my computer is defragged almost daily. no viruses, spyware, trojans, etc.. all my friends are jealous because of the speed of my computer well when it isn't downloading torrent anyways.

Don't use IE for torrent search. Use mozilla as it is stable and also safest.
Your internet is slow due to multi tasking that you have given to your PC. If you download a torrent do not stream any website.. Ur RAM is not sufficient to support 40 processes. I suggest you to keep winamp closed and run minimum applications.
The downloading from a torrent also depends on the seeds you have. Check the no. of seeds that you have for the program you are downloading in the torrent. The more the seeds, the better is the download speed. Hope that helps
