i have a 1986 chevy silverado truck, 6 cylinder. when i start it, smoke comes out the tail pipe. but lately, some during driving also. is it nessarily the rings going bad or could there be other causes like dirty carburator or pcv valve? i just hope its nothing serious?? the motor dont knock, but is tending to smoke out the tail pipe. thanks for answering........

Smells like oil blow by. Get the valves adjusted and see if that works. It worked for me on my 1955 Chevy Wagon

this is very common on chevy engines, when starting if it smokes, it is the valve seals leaking oil down into the intake and/or exhuast ports while the engine is off... It is possible you have worn cylinder walls/rings letting oil into the combustion chamber....(smokes when its being driven)

its completely normal and the motor will last a while like this yet, so dont get too concerned... Always check your oil, and listen for noises
