I am a student in comparative religion for over 2 years now and I am still puzzled by this question (although I understand that there is no simple answer).
Even in ancient times: why would people go at lengths to believe in religious systems that they could never have experienced directly? What is the basic drive behind it?
Please don't answer things like: stupidity. It isn't. People can be very smart and religious at the same time.
