Why is the UFC adopting five-round non-title-fights?

This seemed to come out of nowhere, as I saw no articles about it anywhere, even on UFC's own website, nor did I hear anything about it in any of the recent press conferences. Where did this come from all of a sudden and which fights will they do this for? My guess is that the UFC will only make the headliners five rounds?

Uhm I believe it was actually announced around june 2011 that they would start implementing it soon. My guess however, on why they would do it is so that people who pays for ppv would get their moneys worth, then there would be more decisive fights also. Another thing is that it would give top contenders experience on 5 rounds. Btw yes, this would only apply to the main event. And not the others

Actually there's been talk of this since around spring/summer. And yes, it's only the headlining fights.

I think the main reason they're doing it is to make for more exciting cards, though I'm not sure that will do the trick. The thing is, a lot of headlining fights in the past have been contender shots, so a five-round non-title fight actually simulates the experience of fighting in a title fight. There have also been a few draws in the past few years that might have had a different outcome in a five-round fight, so I think that might also be another motivator in the decision.

If you want to keep up with MMA news, here are a few web sites that you can check a few times a week; some I check several times a day-
