Why is Washington DC called the District of COLUMBIA?

What the heck is a columbia? If it has anything to do with Columbus, that is darn right stupid. They well have to change it soon to the District of Barackolumbia.
Then it will be known as Washington DB.
 
It was a poetic name for the US in the 18th century. DC is a federal district. Makes perfect sense.
