Why religions that approve free-sexual lifestyle have less followers ?

From the source I heard from, human seems to be the second most promiscuous being on earth. In the ancient times there are religions that approve sexual lifestyle that major religions today would disapprove.

Why religions that disapprove sex outside marriage get more followers than religions that approve so ?
