why was budda happy? and was he always happy?

from the statues i see of him he seems like a short, fat, bald guy, not to much to be excited about there and yet he seems joyful and happy in his statues. Whats up with his bliss?

Budai, a Chinese folk/myth figure, completely different person from Siddhartha Gautama, the real Buddha.

Maybe he is happy because he is not a human being to have to put up with this race of ours. I think he may be happy because he is saying, “The joke is on you.” Oh what bliss.
 
Actually, Siddhartha (buddha's name) was not fat, and he was never 'happy' as we would think of it.
He had no connection with this world, and therefore could get no sadness from it, nor any happiness. They called this state bliss.
