why won't my computer recognize the iXL handheld?

I have replaced the batteries twice because the "low battery" symbol popped up, even with brandnew batteries. i have tried different USB ports on our computer - ones that work with our ipods and cameras daily...and i have even tried resetting the handheld. i dont know what else to try...when i go into the fisherprice site, it still says that the iXL isn't hooked up to the computer!
