why wont my transformation gizmo in 3ds max work?

it shows up as x and z being red and y being grey, with no center box or anything. ive tried going to preferences and turning it on there, ive tried hitting x, and ive tried views>show transformation gizmo. NOTHING works. im completely stuck, can anyone help me?
