why won't my wireless laptop pick up a signal from the wireless router in the house?

i have gone through all the setup stuff. at least i think i have. it's a sony vaio 2003. shouldn't it automatically pick up the signal? there is no icon in the systray. what gives?
the button is on, and the light is green
the icon in the systray says connected. on the network connections page, incoming connections says no clients connected.
