A friend of mine was charged with aggravated assault (drunk females attacked him, 4-6 punches and he finally threw one punch in fear. The female he hit suffered severe injury to her eye apparently). He now has a lawyer and it is clearly a self defence case from the police report, nonetheless he is still charged.

I keep telling him he will win this, but he is such a good kid (never expected to be in this) that he is scared 24/7, that he "ruined" his future. He is 16, and a straight A student. A role model to me even, his best friend.

What should I tell him?

This one criminal offense might not ruin his life, but it will certainly follow him all throughout and he will most likely be questioned about it when he goes to college or applies for a job.

This is his only criminal charge right?
