Will a VW Jetta run if you take out the catalytic converter?

I have 2004 VW Jetta. I've heard that newer cars have an oxygen sensor and will not run if the converter is missing. Anyone know about this particular model??

I've seen other cars like that. Usually you can get around it by leaving the converter in the system, but punching it out so there's a straight open path for exhaust to flow through. This is illegal in some states (but so is removing the converter to begin with).

It will probably run, but the check engine light will blink constantly. AND, if you live somewhere that requires smog inspections, it will not pass.

HOWEVER...REMOVING STOCK EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT IS A FEDERAL OFFENSE.

Why do you want to remove it? If there is a problem with your cat, it may still be under warranty. Federal Law requires manufactures to place an 8 year/80k mile warranty on emissions parts.
