Will I have to purchase the data plan for the samsung omnia even it I wont use it?

I know I probably wont use the internet or the windows professional, will i still have to buy the data plan? I'm basically buying this phone cause it has a wide touchscreen and it comes highly recommended for texting ability. If I do have to buy the data plan for the omnia, what are other phone suggestions for a verizon user??
