Will it be worth it to swap in a 12 valve cummins into a 1987 chevrolet k20?

i know one person who swears by them and has a 1986 custom 12v SWB chevy dually and a '94 chevy with a 4BT and has built several others. it is a time consuming and costly swap but if you plan on towing its great. same goes if being different is your goal.

what i personaly know:
you can use the TH400, 700R4/4L60 with an adaptor
cummins' own hardcore
you will need to buy or fab motor mounts, and ive heard, use one ton springs in the front to account for the added weight of the cummins

there are a few forums on the interweb dealing with cummins' and such swaps, join one, there are allot like you in that aspect. you will find haters though...[duramax guys] just kidding about the last part

I think this is a great idea but you may not want to put the money that it will take to get it done.
Your front end may not be strong enough to carry that engine but you can fix that with money.
I'm sure that you may want to use the same transmission that Dodge uses as this is a very high torque engine as compared to your 350. you would also have to change how the engine is mounted to the frame. The rest is minor

compared to a chevy small block? I have a 1987 chevy k20 (or v20). I would like to know whats involved with swaping a 12valve cummins in place of the 350 thats in it now. behind the 350 is a th400. Will the cummins bolt up to the th400? will it be an easy swap? or is it going to be alot more complicated than swaping in another 350?

It will be 10 times more complicated to swap in the cummins. There is no reason to do that. Put another Chevy in it. It is definately not a bolt in!
