will my 02 iphone run with a giff gaff simcard?

hi, I have had an iphone 3g for ages running of and locked to 02 (i have a pay as you go sim card). I would like to change to a sim contract. Now i have heard that giff gaff run of 02 and i have found a very good giff gaff sim contract but if i get the sim, will i need to get my phone unlocked or will i be able to use the giff gaff sim with it still locked to 02?

My experience with O2 is that the phone will not need to be unlocked.
